    I am pleased to announce that Minute Menu Systems has a new CEO. Georgine Muntz comes to us with extensive experience in business strategy, software development best practices, and financial services. Georgine has a passion for supporting women-owned businesses, which describes many of our customers and the centers and providers they serve. When I met Georgine, one of the first things she said to me was “People are the most important thing to me. I believe how you treat your employees is how you treat your customers and it’s what determines success or failure.” Immediately we were kindred spirits. She’s a smart, experienced leader who is eager to learn from our customers how our software can continue to streamline their business.

    The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) is responsible for more than you may think! It provides jobs and opportunities and, of course, promotes healthy eating.

    The CACFP has so many benefits for children, child care providers, families, the list goes on and on. “Through CACFP, more than 4.2 million children and 130,000 adults receive nutritious meals and snacks each day as part of the day care they receive,” states the USDA Food and Nutrition Service.

    A brief history

    The CACFP went through many significant changes and revision from the version we know today. The CACFP was established in 1968 by Congress under the National School Lunch Act. At this time, the food program was only available to child care centers in low-income areas and was known as the Child Care Food Program.

    Almost 10 years later, the food program expanded to family child care homes that met State licensing requirements and were supervised by a sponsoring organization. The nonprofit sponsoring organizations were in charge of keeping the child care homes in compliance with Federal and State regulations as set by the Child Care Food Program.

    In 1987, Congress revised the Child Care Food Program to include a new adult age bracket and later changed the name to what we know today – the Child and Adult Care Food Program.

    In 2010, the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act was signed into law, which revised and structured the CACFP even more. This act identified the CACFP as an important food program that promotes healthy development in young children.

    April 2016, the USDA made the first changes to the CACFP Meal Pattern, which went into effect October 2017.

    How you can get involved

    If you are a child care provider at a center or a home, start with finding a food program sponsor in your state. A sponsor will be able to guide, monitor, and educate you while on the food program and is required for all child care homes. To find a sponsor in your state, click here.

    How to Add Whole Grain-Rich Foods Into Your CACFP Menu

    Whole grains are loaded with healthy benefits! Not only do they decrease several chronic diseases, they provide many nutrients if eaten as part of a healthy diet. “Whole grain-rich foods are an important part of your menu in the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). Foods that are whole grain-rich are filled with vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other nutrients that help kids and adults stay healthy” says the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

    Under the updated meal patterns, at least one serving of grains per day must be whole grain-rich. This requirement can seem overwhelming, especially when you don’t really know if an item is truly whole grain-rich. The USDA has provided a very informative worksheet that goes in depth of the requirement and provides tips for child care providers. Download the worksheet here.

    Porcupine Sliders “are healthy, mouth-watering turkey burgers, high in protein, with just the right amount of spices and a kick of sweet cranberries, all served on small whole-wheat rolls. The addition of brown rice to the burger mixture created a prickly look like little porcupines – thus their name. Porcupine Sliders are a delicious, nutritious, and appetizing new way to get kids to eat healthy.     Mediterranean Quinoa Salad is a “tasty side salad featuring a nutritious whole grain called quinoa, mixed with a colorful variety of vegetables, including red peppers, parsley, and cherry tomatoes.
